From blank sheet to finished sign

ACM sheets for sign shops with different production needs

Aluminium composite material, usually called ACM or ACP, combines aluminium faces with a bonded core. For sign makers, its appeal is a rigid, relatively lightweight face for graphics, lettering and display work. The specification still matters: two sheets described simply as “3 mm ACP” can have different aluminium skins, coatings and fabrication behaviour.

A print shop needs a surface that works with its ink system. A vinyl specialist needs dependable adhesion. A fabricator needs a sheet that tolerates the proposed cutting and forming operations. Start with the finished sign, then define the panel. Explore DERACP’s digital printing aluminium composite panel range as a starting point for discussing the appropriate construction and finish.

Choose by finished application

What will your workshop do to the panel?

Tell DERACP how the sheet will be decorated, cut and supported. That information is more useful than a thickness request alone.

01 / PRINTED FLAT SIGNS

Retail graphics & information boards

For UV flatbed printing, request a sample of the proposed surface and run it with your own inks, curing settings and handling process. Check solid colours, fine text and ink adhesion before approving a run of shop signs or wayfinding panels.

Specify: print side, white point, gloss, finished dimensions and mounting arrangement.

02 / VINYL-FACED PANELS

Business signs & promotional faces

For cut vinyl or mounted printed graphics, assess the combination of panel coating, adhesive film and laminate. A clean surface and a representative application trial help reveal lifting at edges or problems around fine lettering before a rollout.

Specify: vinyl system, indoor or outdoor exposure, single or double-sided graphics.

03 / ROUTED LETTERS & SHAPES

Identity elements & display components

Cut lettering makes edge quality and small-detail strength visible. Send the narrowest stroke, smallest internal radius and fixing concept. Trial an actual letter or component so the sheet and tooling can be assessed at the scale of the finished work.

Specify: cutting file, skin thickness, visible edges and decorative finish direction.

04 / FOLDED SIGN TRAYS

Fascia trays & dimensional displays

A flat sign blank is not automatically a folding grade. Discuss aluminium skin, alloy and temper, groove geometry, return depth and corner details before ordering. Approve a fabricated sample using the intended workshop process.

Specify: tray drawing, bend locations, support frame and required surface appearance.

ACP is opaque. For an illuminated sign, it can be considered for the surround or a designed cut-out face; a translucent light-emitting face requires a suitable separate material.

Sheet specification

Separate panel thickness from aluminium skin

Use these published DERACP dimensions to begin the conversation. They describe reference configurations, rather than a guarantee that every finish and construction is available in every combination.

A nominal 4 × 8 ft description should not replace exact dimensions in millimetres on the order. Confirm current availability and the agreed tolerances with DERACP.

Surface selection

Approve the surface with your graphic system

For direct printing, the panel coating and ink must work together. A white sheet can look suitable and still need a different preparation or curing approach. Ask which surface is proposed for your process, then approve it with the printer operator. Avoid assuming that a product described as “digital printing ACP” is compatible with every UV printer.

For applied graphics, test the actual vinyl and laminate. For an unprinted branded sign, assess the finish under the lighting and viewing angle of the installation. Keep a retained sample when a project may require matching replacement faces later.

A glossy appearance can suit bold identity panels, while reflections may distract from close-range text. Consider DERACP’s high gloss aluminium composite panels for appearance-led work, with suitability checked against the intended location and graphics.

Workshop approval

Put a sample through the job it will actually do

Use one documented trial to connect the material decision with the finished result. The following are acceptance questions to agree with your production team.

01 / GRAPHICS

Print or apply the intended artwork

Include a solid ink area, a fine line and a critical brand colour. Record the proposed surface, preparation and graphic system. Agree how adhesion and appearance will be accepted before the production run.

02 / MACHINING

Cut a representative detail

Inspect the smallest letter, internal corner or exposed edge in the design. Establish appropriate tooling and process settings on the sample, rather than relying on a setting used for a different panel.

03 / FORMING

Check the complete tray detail

Where folding is proposed, approve the actual groove and corner construction. Inspect the visible face after forming. Record the accepted material build alongside the drawing so a repeat order can be reviewed against it.

04 / FINISHED ASSEMBLY

Review how the sign will be supported

Assess the panel together with its frame and fixing arrangement. Confirm who will approve the support design for the sign’s size, location and exposure. A sheet specification alone does not approve an installation.

Material choice

Where ACP fits in your substrate range

ACP deserves consideration when the job needs a rigid, decorated face with a composite construction. Compare the finished assembly rather than the raw sheet alone: graphics, edge treatment, support, installation and replacement requirements all affect the result.

Corrugated plastic can be considered for short campaign work. Solid aluminium may be specified where a particular sign standard or fixing system requires it. Acrylic or polycarbonate may be relevant when light transmission is essential. Choose from the job requirements, rather than treating one substrate as suitable for every sign.

Outdoor signage needs a complete specification

State exposure, intended service period and maintenance access. Confirm coating suitability and the graphics supplier’s requirements. For regulated locations, request documentation for the actual core and panel construction.

DERACP lists a fire-resistant ACP sheet range. Any required classification must be verified against the supplied product, test scope and local project requirements.

Wholesale sign grade ACP

Buy against an approved workshop specification

For recurring sign production, define what “sign grade” means in your own order. It is more useful as an agreed set of requirements than as a standalone label.

Plan usable blanks for your machinery

Send finished panel sizes and quantities. Allow for trimming, cutting kerf, print bleed and any required finish direction when checking a nesting layout. A larger sheet only helps if it fits the machinery and produces useful blanks for your order mix.

For example, four nominal 600 × 1200 mm faces appear to fit within a 1220 × 2440 mm sheet. That is a layout starting point; confirm trim allowances, kerf and artwork bleed before treating four faces as the production yield.

Make repeat orders identifiable

Keep the approved sample, construction details and surface description together. If the order changes from a flat face to a folded tray, review the build again instead of reusing the previous thickness description.

Ask for a quote stating minimum quantity, finish availability, packing, delivery basis and production schedule. DERACP can review the enquiry against the requested configuration; price and supply terms need confirmation for each order.

Working with DERACP

A manufacturing discussion built around the finished sign

DERACP manufactures aluminium composite panels in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China, with more than 20 years of ACP experience and supply to international markets. Its range includes printing panels, gloss and decorative finishes, with non-standard dimensions discussed by agreement.

Connect the finish to the construction

Discuss appearance, aluminium skin and panel thickness in one enquiry. This helps the sales and production teams understand whether you are buying graphic faces, cut components or panels intended for further fabrication.

Agree quality checks with the factory

DERACP’s quality control facilities include instrument-based testing and accelerated aging equipment. Discuss the checks, acceptance requirements and available records for your proposed panel as part of the order, so the material review addresses your sign production needs.

For sign programmes with demanding appearance requirements, agree inspection conditions, acceptable surface variation and the reference sample before manufacture. This gives both teams a clear basis for reviewing the delivery.

Questions from sign shops

ACP sign panel FAQ

Are ACP and ACM the same material for sign making?

In sign supply, ACP means aluminium composite panel and ACM means aluminium composite material. Both commonly describe aluminium faces bonded to a core. The names do not define the skin, core, coating or fabrication grade, so confirm those details on the quotation.

Is 3 mm ACP enough for a sign?

It can be a starting point for a supported flat sign, but suitability depends on face dimensions, aluminium skin, mounting and exposure. Ask for a construction recommendation using the finished sign details. A thicker sheet alone does not resolve an unsuitable support design.

Can I UV print directly onto DERACP panels?

Discuss the intended UV printer and ink system with DERACP and request the proposed surface for testing. Approve adhesion, curing and appearance on a sample before production. A decorative coating or a printing-category name is not a universal compatibility guarantee.

Can one sheet be used for both flat signs and folded trays?

Only when its construction is suitable for both processes. For trays, confirm the skin, alloy and temper, groove geometry and forming method. Approve a fabricated sample rather than assuming every flat sign panel can be folded successfully.

Does DERACP offer 4 × 8 ACP sheets?

DERACP publishes a 1220 × 2440 mm reference size. Confirm exact metric dimensions, tolerances and the required thickness on your enquiry. Nominal 4 × 8 ft and rounded metric descriptions should not substitute for agreed order dimensions.

What should a wholesale sign grade ACP quote include?

Include sheet size, total thickness, skin thickness, core, finish on both faces, quantity and destination. Add your printing or fabrication process and any required documentation. Ask DERACP to confirm minimum quantity, packing, delivery basis and schedule.

Are standard ACP sheets suitable for road traffic signs?

Do not assume general sign-grade ACP meets a regulated traffic sign specification. Confirm the required substrate, reflectivity system, mechanical performance and fixing approvals with the relevant project authority. A general-purpose sign blank is not evidence of compliance.

What should I check before ordering double-sided signs?

Specify the coating and colour on each face, whether both faces will carry graphics, and how the edges and fixings will be finished. Confirm both proposed surfaces with your graphics process and check how the sign will be viewed under the intended lighting.
