A zinc finish is more than “grey ACM”
The architectural effect comes from undertone, gloss, texture, viewing angle and the way adjacent panels read together. For a convincing zinc-look cladding surface, those appearance variables need to be controlled alongside the panel construction.
That distinction matters during procurement. “Zinc look ACM” can refer to a coated or printed aluminum surface, while “zinc composite material” can refer to a panel with an actual zinc face. The two products differ in surface behavior, weathering, cost, fabrication detail and project documentation.
DERACP’s zinc finish page is therefore written around a zinc-look aluminum composite panel specification unless an alternative construction is explicitly agreed in the quotation. This keeps the product description aligned with what is actually ordered.
Zinc-look ACM vs. natural zinc composite: do not treat them as interchangeable
Zinc-look aluminum composite panel
An aluminum composite panel using a decorative coating or surface treatment to create a zinc-inspired appearance. It is useful where the designer wants the visual direction of zinc while working with an aluminum-faced composite sheet.
- Appearance can be coordinated by color, pattern, gloss and sample.
- Panel routing, folding and module planning follow the selected ACP construction.
- Surface does not automatically develop the same patina as natural zinc.
- Specify exterior coating suitability separately from the color name.
Natural zinc composite material
A metal composite material with an actual zinc face is a different material category. Natural zinc products can evolve visually as the metal weathers and may require zinc-specific detailing and isolation from dissimilar metals.
- Real zinc surface with material-specific weathering behavior.
- Fabrication and fixing details should follow the zinc composite supplier’s instructions.
- Galvanic compatibility and edge/detail design can require added attention.
- Do not substitute a zinc-look coating without project approval.
Four decisions that make a zinc ACP façade look intentional
Choose the zinc direction
Define whether the project calls for pale zinc, blue-grey, medium weathered grey, graphite, charcoal or another reference. Avoid approving a project only from a generic “zinc” color name.
Control gloss and texture
A low-gloss mineral look reads differently from a metallic sparkle or a linear brushed effect. State the intended visual character and use a physical reference where the façade is appearance-sensitive.
Plan panel orientation
Patterned or metallic effects can change with orientation and light. Define a consistent fabrication and installation direction for visible elevations, especially when cassettes are cut from multiple sheets.
Approve the production reference
Link the accepted appearance to the quotation, construction and sample. For phased projects or later replacements, keep the approved reference and order data rather than relying on a color name alone.
Match coating to service
Interior decorative use and exposed exterior cladding place different demands on the coating. Discuss UV exposure, climate, cleaning, pollutants and intended service conditions before confirming a coating route.
Design joints with the finish
Zinc-inspired surfaces often rely on calm, architectural panel grids. Coordinate sheet size, cassette return, joint width and support layout early so the finish and geometry reinforce each other.
Recommended zinc finish ACP specification framework
The table is a purchasing framework rather than a universal project specification. Final values and applicable test documentation should match the exact ordered construction and the requirements of the project jurisdiction.
| Specification item | Typical discussion direction | What the buyer should confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Total panel thickness | Common ACP project discussions include 3 mm and 4 mm; other constructions may be reviewed. | Do not use total thickness as a substitute for aluminum skin thickness. |
| Aluminum skins | Project-adjusted according to end use, fabrication and required rigidity. | State face and back skin separately in the quotation. |
| Core | PE or fire-retardant directions can be discussed according to product series and project need. | For fire-regulated work, require the exact classification/test report applicable to the supplied construction. |
| Surface finish | Zinc grey, blue-grey, graphite, charcoal, weathered-metal or approved custom reference. | Confirm color, gloss, pattern/texture and visual direction with an identifiable sample. |
| Coating / surface system | Interior or exterior-appropriate options are reviewed against exposure. | Confirm coating chemistry and exterior suitability; “zinc color” alone does not define durability. |
| Sheet size | 1220 × 2440 mm is a common reference size; project dimensions can be discussed within manufacturing and logistics limits. | Coordinate width, length, tolerance, pallet size, container loading and fabrication yield. |
| Fabrication | Cutting, routing, folding, drilling and cassette fabrication according to the selected panel build. | Confirm V-groove detail, bend direction, minimum returns and protective-film handling with the fabricator. |
| Appearance approval | Physical sample or agreed project reference. | Record sample code/date and viewing direction before bulk production. |
| Packaging | Protective film, pallet protection, labels and export packing. | Tell DERACP whether private-label film, project marks or distributor packaging is required. |

Applications for zinc color composite cladding
The strongest use case is not simply “a grey panel.” Zinc-look ACP works when the design calls for a restrained architectural metal expression and the project benefits from composite-panel flatness and fabrication.
Commercial façades & rainscreen cassettes
Use zinc-inspired grey or graphite to create quiet, large-format elevations. Coordinate coating, core, panel module, support system and local fire requirements as a complete façade package.
Entrances, canopies, fascia & soffits
Zinc-look ACM can visually connect entrance portals, soffits and fascia with the main exterior palette while allowing folded details and crisp returns.
Retail & hospitality interiors
Low-gloss zinc tones work with stone, glass, timber and dark fixtures for feature walls, counters, columns and ceiling details. Interior coating choices can be evaluated separately from exterior grades.
Corporate identity & OEM programs
Distributors and branded rollouts can build repeat specifications around a controlled zinc color, sheet construction, protective film, labels and packing—useful when the same look is required across multiple locations.
What to send DERACP for a useful zinc ACP quotation
Application & market
Façade, soffit, interior, retail or distribution; include destination country and project exposure.
Panel construction
Total thickness, face/back aluminum skins, core requirement and any fire/test documents requested by the project.
Zinc appearance
Reference photo, physical sample, target grey/graphite direction, gloss and whether a patterned or brushed effect is acceptable.
Size & quantity
Width × length, estimated square meters/sheets, fabrication route, protective film, packing and delivery destination.
Specify the entire panel, not only the surface color
Manufacturing experience
DERACP states more than 20 years of experience producing aluminum composite panels for multiple applications. That production context supports discussions that connect surface selection with panel build, fabrication and order control.
Custom finish coordination
Instead of forcing a project into one catalog swatch, DERACP can review finish direction and custom color references together with coating, gloss, construction and quantity.
Project documentation mindset
For regulated uses, the correct question is which test or classification applies to the exact supplied construction. Quotations, samples and technical documents should describe the same panel.
Custom dimensions
Project sizes can be discussed to improve fabrication yield, panel module planning and logistics, subject to manufacturing, handling and packing limits.
OEM & distributor supply
Protective film, labels, repeated SKU specifications and export packing can be coordinated for buyers building a repeat zinc-look ACP program.
QC before shipment
Appearance-sensitive orders benefit from defined samples, construction records and inspection points. Confirm the agreed inspection scope in the commercial order.

Zinc Finish Aluminum Composite Panel FAQ
What is a zinc finish aluminum composite panel?
It is an aluminum composite panel specified with a zinc-inspired decorative appearance, such as cool grey, blue-grey, graphite or weathered-metal tones. The visible effect may be created by a coating or decorative surface system on aluminum. This is different from a composite panel that uses an actual zinc face.
Is zinc-look ACM the same as natural zinc composite material?
No. Zinc-look ACM generally describes an aluminum-faced composite panel designed to resemble zinc. Natural zinc composite material uses real zinc as a face material. Confirm the face metal and product construction in the quotation rather than relying on the word “zinc.”
Can DERACP produce a custom zinc color?
DERACP can review custom color and finish directions using a project reference, RAL/Pantone direction where suitable, or an approved physical sample. Feasibility, minimum quantity, coating route and final approval method should be confirmed for the specific order.
Can zinc ACP panel be used outdoors?
Potentially, provided the selected panel construction and surface system are appropriate for the intended exterior exposure. State climate, UV exposure, project location, cleaning conditions and required documentation so the coating and construction can be reviewed for the project.
What thickness should I specify for zinc color composite cladding?
There is no single universal thickness. 4 mm is a common discussion point for many architectural ACM applications, but total thickness, aluminum skin thickness, core, support spacing, cassette geometry and project requirements need to be evaluated together.
How should a zinc-look finish be approved before mass production?
Use an identifiable physical sample when appearance is important. Record the approved tone, gloss, texture or pattern, orientation and panel construction in the order documents. Screen images can help shortlist a direction but should not be the sole reference for sensitive architectural finishes.
Send the zinc appearance you want—not just the word “zinc”
Share your reference image or sample, project application, panel thickness, aluminum skins, core requirement, coating, sheet size, quantity and destination. DERACP can then review a zinc-look ACP construction against the actual purchasing brief.
